Introduction
Welcome to the home of Kisimi the free and open-source wiki system.
Kisimi is a simple Wiki, based on DokuWiki, with more than a few handy features that’s designed to look good and cover the basics. Pages in a wiki-enabled web site have the ability to be edited by anyone. This allows content to be added by anyone around the world providing a collaborative space for your ideas and documentation. Each persons changes are tracked and credited to them which allows for easy editing and infinite versions of each page.
A site running Kisimi can be used for anything from simple note taking or a place to store ideas or even technical manuals. Pages can be opened up to the world or restricted to you and your friends or colleagues. You can also upload your documents and images or other files for use in your pages. You don’t have to know anything about HTML or programming, just jump in and start writing.
Features include Privacy and Protection of pages and files and the concept of Ownership of categories (collections of pages). Changes to each page are saved with differences immediately available via History. To learn about other features have a read through the Manual or suggest a feature on the Feedback page.
To see what Kisimi can do, try the SandPit. Anyone can make and save changes to these pages, although until you sign in you won’t be able to Protect pages, mark your own as Private or claim Categories.
A couple of test pages imported from Wikipedia are Pitt Island and Wekas.

The Name
The name Kisimi comes from Kisimi Kamara of Sierra Leone who created the Mende language of the region to encourage literacy among his people.
Changes
October 2009
A huge number of improvements in the 20091025 release. Here are some of the more important ones.
- Page security allows you to dictate exactly who can view and edit your pages. Some people can edit your pages, some can view and everyone else can’t see a thing.
- Kisimi now comes with an upgrade option at installation time and things are a little smarter. Installation can take less than 2min!
- Longer pages with headings can automatically generate a table of contents section. This can also be set by users in their preferences.
- Users can specify a timezone so that the dates and times are relevant to their location.
- Administrators can prevent new user sign ups. This can help maintain a wiki being used as reference documentation.
- Any user with an email address listed with the www.gravatar.com service has their avatar image appear in their preferences.
- Tidier user interface with plenty of little shiny bits.
- Plenty of bug fixes including those messages for PHP configs that show all warnings. It’s recommended that those warnings are disabled for production servers.
April 2009
- Any wiki page with more than 3 headings will automatically get a table of contents at the top right. You can disable this in your preferences.
- Wiki pages that you own can be exported as XML. When available on the current page, you’ll see a new item in the Share menu.
- Improvements to the install scripts and update of default installed pages.
- Couple of bug fixes and internal code documentation.
March 2009
- Couple of bug fixes, 1280, 1284, 1285
- Initial changes published to allow user themes for the title area of each page.
January 2009
- Users can now make more use of their screen real estate by hiding the side menu. If you’ve logged in then your view setting will be remembered.
- You can now set pages as Private when you’re first creating them. See Bug 1276
- Certain actions you do when you’re logged in are know hidden from public view on the Timeline. Things like Attachment file names and Private pages are no one else’s business.
Older changes (pre-2009) are in the changes section.
